Singleton Hospital Swansea modernizes with Weishaupt multiflam® burners

The burners on the steam boilers installed at Singleton Hospital Swansea in the 1980s and 1990s needed to be replaced to avoid ongoing, lengthy, and costly downtime. Having previously worked with Weishaupt on upgrades at other sites, National Health Service Wales turned to the burner specialist.

The main boiler house at Singleton Hospital consists of one 4.7 MW and two 3.8 MW steam boilers, which run on either natural gas or fuel oil and generate steam for hot water, heating, and sterilization purposes.

The tender documents stated that each burner should be capable of achieving a control ratio of at least 1:9 for natural gas and 1:5 for fuel oil; and that the burners for both fuel types must comply with the MCPD (Medium Combustion Plant Directive), which stipulates maximum NOx emissions of 100 mg/Nm³ for natural gas and 200 mg/Nm³ for fuel oil.

Based on the requirements of the health authority, Weishaupt supplied and commissioned three modulating monarch® WM-GL 30 dual-fuel burners with multiflam® technology for low emissions. Each of the three burners was equipped with speed control, which reduces power consumption and ensures lower noise levels at lower burner outputs. In addition, the burners feature O2 control, which improves the combustion efficiency of the boilers and saves energy by continuously measuring the residual oxygen in the flue gases. A Weishaupt switchgear for controlling the boiler sequence further reduces fuel consumption.

In summary, Anthony Wiltshire, property manager at Singleton Hospital, says that Weishaupt has delivered a fit-and-forget solution. "I didn't realize how bad the previous burners were until we installed Weishaupt. You just can't compare them! Instead of receiving panicked calls at 3 a.m., for example, and having to rush to work because a burner has failed, and then being under pressure to fix the problem and wondering if the boiler maintenance company is available, we now have something we can rely on. That's absolutely fantastic and takes a lot of pressure off!"
